BL and NL 13/15/16-heat Match

The 13-heat format was used in the British League from 1969 to 1987, the National League from 1975 to 1985, and the British League Division 3 during 1994.
The 15-heat format was used in the British League from 1988 to 1990.
The 16-heat format was used in the National League from 1987 to 1990.

Teams comprise seven riders who are numbered 1 to 7. The two riders with the lowest averages are the reserves and must be programmed at Nos. 6 and 7 (in any order).

The heat format is determined as follows:

Heat   HOME TEAM     AWAY TEAM
Red Blue White Y/B
1: 1  (A-B) 2  (C-D) 1  (B-A) 2  (D-C)
2: 6  (B-A) 7  (D-C) 6  (A-B) 7  (C-D)
3: 5  (C-D) 4  (A-B) 5  (D-C) 4  (B-A)
4: 3  (C-D) 6  (A-B) 3  (D-C) 7  (B-A)
5: 5  (D-C) 4  (B-A) 1  (C-D) 2  (A-B)
6: 1  (D-C) 2  (B-A) 3  (A-B) 6  (C-D)
7: 3  (B-A) 6  (D-C) 5  (C-D) 4  (A-B)
8: 2  (D-C) 7  (B-A) 2  (C-D) 7  (A-B)
9: 5  (A-B) 4  (C-D) 3  (B-A) 6  (D-C)
10: 1  (C-D) 2  (A-B) 5  (B-A) 4  (D-C)
11: 3  (A-B) 7  (C-D) 1  (D-C) 2  (B-A)
12: 1  (B-A) 4  (D-C) 3  (C-D) 5  (A-B)
13: 3  (D-C) 5  (B-A) 1  (A-B) 4  (C-D)
The following heats are added for 15-heat matches:
14: 6  (C-D) 7  (A-B) 6  (B-A) 7  (D-C)
15: Nom *  (B-A) *  (D-C) *  (A-B) *  (C-D)
The following heats are added for 16-heat matches:
14: 2  (A-B) 6  (C-D) 2  (D-C) 6  (B-A)
15: 3  (B-A) 5  (D-C) 3  (A-B) 5  (C-D)
16: 1  (C-D) 4  (A-B) 1  (B-A) 4  (D-C)

Riders take the starting gate positions indicated in parenthesis. The actual gate sequence used during the match is determined by the team captain winning the toss of a coin prior to the start. Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside.

Each reserve may have a maximum of six rides in a 13-heat match and seven rides in a 15/16-heat match that may be taken at any time. All exclusions count as rides, and a reserve that has been excluded may not be used in the same heat again.

All riders must take at least two rides during the match unless declared injured (which must be taken prior to Heat 15 in a 15-heat match). If a rider is unable to take the minimum number of rides, their place in a heat may not be taken by any other rider until this requirement is met (i.e. a team may not track a rider). For the purposes of this regulation, an exclusion for a starting infringement or exceeding the two minute time allowance only counts as a ride if the excluded rider is not replaced.

In Heats 5 to 13 of a 13/15-heat match or Heats 5 to 16 of a 16-heat match, a team behind by six or more points may substitute a programmed rider with any other rider in the team, provided each rider is only used as a tactical substitute once. A substitute rider takes the helmet colour and starting gate position of the replaced rider. Both riders in a heat may be substituted in this manner, provided the Referee is clearly notified which substitute replaces which rider.

In a 15-heat match, each team must nominate two riders for Heat 15; the home team declaring first.

The team scoring the greater number of points over all heats is declared the winner. When teams score an equal number of points, the match is declared a draw.

BL 18-heat Match

This match format was used in the British League during 1993.

Teams comprise eight riders who are numbered 1 to 8. The two riders with the lowest averages are the reserves and must be programmed at Nos. 7 and 8 (in any order). In addition, the three riders with the highest averages must be programmed at Nos. 1, 3 and 5 (in any order).

The heat format is determined as follows:

Heat   HOME TEAM     AWAY TEAM
Red Blue White Y/B
1: 1  (A-B) 2  (C-D) 1  (B-A) 2  (D-C)
2: 3  (B-A) 4  (D-C) 3  (C-D) 4  (A-B)
3: 5  (C-D) 6  (A-B) 5  (B-A) 6  (D-C)
4: 7  (B-A) 8  (D-C) 7  (C-D) 8  (A-B)
5: 1  (C-D) 2  (A-B) 3  (B-A) 4  (D-C)
6: 5  (D-C) 6  (B-A) 1  (C-D) 2  (A-B)
7: 3  (C-D) 4  (A-B) 5  (D-C) 6  (B-A)
8: 2  (B-A) 7  (D-C) 2  (C-D) 7  (A-B)
9: 5  (A-B) 6  (C-D) 3  (D-C) 4  (B-A)
10: 1  (B-A) 2  (D-C) 5  (A-B) 6  (C-D)
11: 3  (A-B) 4  (C-D) 1  (D-C) 2  (B-A)
12: 6  (D-C) 8  (B-A) 6  (A-B) 8  (C-D)
13: 3  (D-C) 5  (B-A) 3  (A-B) 5  (C-D)
14: 1  (D-C) 4  (B-A) 1  (A-B) 4  (C-D)
15: 7  (C-D) 8  (A-B) 7  (D-C) 8  (B-A)
16: Low *  (A-B) *  (C-D) *  (B-A) *  (D-C)
17: Mid *  (B-A) *  (D-C) *  (A-B) *  (C-D)
18: High *  (A-B) *  (C-D) *  (B-A) *  (D-C)

Riders take the starting gate positions indicated in parenthesis. The actual gate sequence used during the match is determined by the team captain winning the toss of a coin prior to the start. Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside.

Each reserve may have a maximum of seven rides that can be taken at any time. All exclusions count as rides, and a reserve that has been excluded may not be used in the same heat again.

If both reserves in a team are declared injured, the rider with the next lowest average is eligible to ride in Heats 4 and 15.

All riders must take at least two rides prior to Heat 15 unless declared injured.

In Heats 5 to 14, a team behind by six or more points may substitute a programmed rider with any other rider in the team, provided each rider is only used as a tactical substitute once. A substitute rider takes the helmet colour and starting gate position of the replaced rider. Both riders in a heat may be substituted in this manner, provided the Referee is clearly notified which substitute replaces which rider.

After Heat 15, each team nominates their riders for the three remaining heats; the home team declaring first. Riders Nos. 1 to 6 may only be nominated as follows: Heat 16 - two lowest scorers, Heat 17 - two middle scorers, Heat 18 - two highest scorers. The scores from programmed rides only are counted and bonus points are included. Team members scoring an equal number of points may be nominated for any heat where they are eligible.

The team scoring the greater number of points over all heats is declared the winner. When teams score an equal number of points, the match is declared a draw.

16: Top *  (A-B) *  (C-D) *  (B-A) *  (D-C)

Riders take the starting gate positions indicated in parenthesis. The actual gate sequence used during the match is determined by the team captain winning the toss of a coin prior to the start. Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside.

Each reserve may have a maximum of seven rides that can be taken at any time. All exclusions count as rides, and a reserve that has been excluded may not be used in the same heat again.

All riders must take at least three rides prior to Heat 15 unless declared injured.

In Heats 5 to 14, a team behind by eight or more points may substitute a programmed rider with any other rider in the team, provided each rider is only used as a tactical substitute once. A substitute rider takes the helmet colour and starting gate position of the replaced rider. Both riders in a heat may be substituted in this manner, provided the Referee is clearly notified which substitute replaces which rider.

Each team may nominate any two riders for Heat 15, except those participating in Heat 16.

The two highest scoring riders in each team (reserves excepted) may only ride in Heat 16. The scores from all rides are counted and bonus points are included. A rider in this heat may only be replaced by a reserve except when declared injured. In this event, the scores of the rider are not considered when deciding the heat line-up.

The home team declares their riders for Heats 15 and 16 first.

The team scoring the greater number of points over all heats is declared the winner. When teams score an equal number of points, the match is declared a draw.

BEL and BPL Match 1997

This match format was used in the British Elite League and British Premier League during 1997.

Teams comprise six riders who are numbered 1 to 6. The three riders with the highest averages must be programmed at Nos. 1, 3 and 5 (in any order). In addition, the riders with the lowest and second-lowest averages are designated as the Reserve and Supplementary Reserve respectively.

The heat format is determined as follows:

Heat   HOME TEAM     AWAY TEAM
Red Blue White Y/B
1: 1  (A-B) 2  (C-D) 1  (B-A) 2  (D-C)
2: 3  (B-A) 4  (D-C) 3  (A-B) 4  (C-D)
3: 5  (A-B) 6  (C-D) 5  (B-A) 6  (D-C)
4: 1  (C-D) 2  (A-B) 3  (D-C) 4  (B-A)
5: 3  (C-D) 4  (A-B) 5  (D-C) 6  (B-A)
6: 5  (B-A) 6  (D-C) 1  (A-B) 2  (C-D)
7: 1  (B-A) 2  (D-C) 5  (A-B) 6  (C-D)

14: Nom *  (B-A) *  (D-C) *  (A-B) *  (C-D)
15: Top * * * *

Riders take the starting gate positions indicated in parenthesis. The actual gate sequence used during the match is determined by the team captain winning the toss of a coin prior to the start. For Heat 15, the home team has choice of gate positions (A & C or B & D). Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside.

A Reserve may have a maximum of six rides prior to Heat 13, and a maximum of seven rides in total. These rides can be taken at any time. A Supplementary Reserve may also have a maximum of six rides prior to Heat 13, but may only be used as a replacement (unless it is a replacement under the tactical substitute or rider replacement rules) in heats where the Reserve is also riding, or when the Reserve no longer has any spare rides available after taking into account their remaining programmed rides. In addition, a Supplementary Reserve may not replace a Reserve excluded for a starting infringement or exceeding the two minute time allowance. All exclusions count as rides.

All riders must take at least three rides prior to Heat 13 unless declared injured.

In Heats 4 to 12, a team behind by eight or more points may substitute a programmed rider with any other rider in the team, provided each rider is only used as a tactical substitute once. A substitute rider takes the helmet colour and starting gate position of the replaced rider. Both riders in a heat may be substituted in this manner, provided the Referee is clearly notified which substitute replaces which rider.

Each team must nominate two riders for Heat 13, and two riders for Heat 14. These riders may not be those participating in Heat 15, and no rider other than the Reserve may be nominated for both Heats 13 and 14 (except when rider replacement is being used).

The two highest scoring riders in each team may only ride in Heat 15. The scores from programmed rides only are counted and bonus points are included. A rider in this heat may only be replaced by the Reserve except when declared injured. In this event, the scores of the rider are not considered when deciding the heat line-up.

The team in the lead after Heat 12, or the home team if the scores are level, declares their riders for Heats 13 to 15 first.

The team scoring the greater number of points over all heats is declared the winner. When teams score an equal number of points, the match is declared a draw.

BEL Match 1998

This match format was used in the British Elite League during 1998.

Teams comprise six riders who are numbered 1 to 6. The two riders with the lowest averages are the reserves and must be programmed at Nos. 5 and 6 (in any order).

The heat format is determined as follows:

Heat   HOME TEAM     AWAY TEAM
Red Blue White Y/B
1: 1  (A-B) 2  (C-D) 1  (B-A) 2  (D-C)
2: 5  (B-A) 6  (D-C) 5  (A-B) 6  (C-D)

8: 2  (D-C) 6  (B-A) 2  (C-D) 6  (A-B)
9: 3  (D-C) *  (B-A) 4  (A-B) 5  (C-D)
10: 1  (D-C) 2  (B-A) 3  (C-D) *  (A-B)
11: 4  (A-B) 5  (C-D) 1  (D-C) 2  (B-A)
12: 3  (A-B) 6  (C-D) 3  (D-C) 5  (B-A)
13: 1  (B-A) 4  (D-C) 1  (A-B) 4  (C-D)
14: *  (C-D) 5  (A-B) *  (B-A) 6  (D-C)
15: Top *  (B-A) *  (D-C) *  (A-B) *  (C-D)

Riders take the starting gate positions indicated in parenthesis. The actual gate sequence used during the match is determined by the team captain winning the toss of a coin prior to the start. Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside.

Riders Nos. 1 to 4 may have a maximum of seven rides. This includes one tactical substitute, one rider replacement, one nominated and one Heat 15 ride.

Each reserve may have a maximum of seven rides that can be taken at any time. All exclusions count as rides, and a reserve that has been excluded may not be used in the same heat again.

All riders must take at least three rides prior to Heat 15 unless declared injured.

Any two of the three highest scoring riders in each team must be nominated for Heat 15; the home team declaring first. The scores from all rides are counted and bonus points are included. A rider in this heat may only be replaced by a reserve except when declared injured. In this event, the next highest scoring rider becomes eligible instead.

The team scoring the greater number of points over all heats is declared the winner. When teams score an equal number of points, the match is declared a draw.

BDL Support Match

This match format was used in the British Development League during 1995 and 1996. Matches were run as support events at senior fixtures.

Teams comprise four riders who are numbered 1 to 4. The riders with the lowest and second-lowest averages are designated as the Reserve and Supplementary Reserve respectively. The heat format is determined as follows:

Heat   HOME TEAM     AWAY TEAM
Red Blue White Y/B
1: 1  (A) 2  (C) 1  (B) 2  (D)
2: 3  (B) 4  (D) 3  (A) 4  (C)
3: 3  (A) 2  (C) 4  (B) 2  (D)
4: 4  (B) 1  (D) 1  (A) 3  (C)
5: 2  (A) 1  (C) 4  (B) 3  (D)
6: 4  (B) 3  (D) 2  (A) 1  (C)

Riders take the starting gate positions indicated in parenthesis. Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside.

A Reserve may have a maximum of five rides that can be taken at any time. A Supplementary Reserve may also have a maximum of five rides, but may only be used as a replacement in heats where the Reserve is also riding, or when the Reserve no longer has any spare rides available after taking into account their remaining programmed rides. In addition, a Supplementary Reserve may not replace a Reserve excluded for a starting infringement or exceeding the two minute time allowance. All exclusions count as rides.

No rider is required to take a minimum number of rides.

The team scoring the greater number of points over all heats is declared the winner. When teams score an equal number of points, the match is declared a draw.

Polish League Match Pre-1994

Teams comprise eight riders who are numbered 1 to 8 when riding away, and 9 to 16 when riding at home. The reserves are programmed at Nos. 7/15 and 8/16, but a team may nominate only one reserve if they wish. Reserves must be junior riders.

The heat format is determined as follows:

Heat   HOME TEAM     AWAY TEAM
Red Blue Y/B White

Riders take the starting gate positions indicated in parenthesis. Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside.

Each reserve may have a maximum of five rides that can be taken at any time, plus an additional ride as a tactical substitute. They may not however, replace riders excluded for starting infringements or exceeding the two minute time allowance. All exclusions count as rides.

No rider is required to take a minimum number of rides.

In Heats 4 to 15, a team behind by six or more points may substitute a programmed rider with any other rider in the team, provided each rider is only used as a tactical substitute once. A substitute rider takes the helmet colour and starting gate position of the replaced rider. Both riders in a heat may be substituted in this manner, provided the Referee is clearly notified which substitute replaces which rider.

The team scoring the greater number of points over all heats is declared the winner. When teams score an equal number of points, the match is declared a draw.

Polish League Match 1994-1998

This match format was used in the Polish Leagues from 1994 to 1998.

Teams comprise eight riders who are numbered 1 to 8 when riding away, and 9 to 16 when riding at home. Rider Nos. 6/14 and 7/15 must be junior riders, but there are no restrictions on who may be programmed as the reserve at No.8/16.

Riders take the starting gate position indicated in parenthesis. Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside.

All riders may have a maximum of six rides. This includes one tactical substitute and one Heat 14/15 ride. Rider Nos. 6/14 and 7/15 may also take an additional ride as a reserve.

A reserve may have a maximum of six rides that can be taken at any time; except they may only replace Rider Nos. 6/14 and 7/15 if they also have junior status, or if those riders sustain an injury in a heat from which they were not excluded.

Riders excluded for starting infringements or exceeding the two minute time allowance may not be replaced.

In Heats 4 to 6 and 8 to 13, a team behind by six or more points may substitute a programmed rider with any other rider in the team, provided each rider is only used as a tactical substitute once. In addition, Rider Nos. 6/14 and 7/15 may not be substituted at any time. A substitute rider takes the helmet colour and starting gate position of the replaced rider. Both riders in a heat may be substituted in this manner, provided the Referee is clearly notified which substitute replaces which rider.

Each team may nominate any two riders for Heat 14, except those participating in Heat 15.

The two highest scoring riders in each team (reserves excepted) may only ride in Heat 15. The scores from all rides are counted, but bonus points are not included. A rider in this heat may only be replaced by a reserve except when declared injured. In this event, any rider that has not taken part in Heat 14 may be used instead.

The team scoring the greater number of points over all heats is declared the winner. When teams score an equal number of points, the match is declared a draw.

After Heat 11 of a 14-heat match, or Heat 12 of a 15-heat match, each team nominates their riders for the three remaining heats; the home team declaring first. Riders Nos. 1 to 6 may only be nominated as follows: Heat 12/13 - two lowest scorers, Heat 13/14 - two middle scorers, Heat 14/15 - two highest scorers. The scores from programmed rides only are counted and bonus points are included. Team members scoring an equal number of points may be nominated for any heat where they are eligible.

The team scoring the greater number of points over all heats is declared the winner. When teams score an equal number of points, the match is declared a draw.

The following heats are added for 16-heat matches:
15: Low *  (A) *  (C) *  (B) *  (D)
16: High *  (B) *  (D) *  (A) *  (C)

Riders take the starting gate positions indicated in parenthesis. Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside.

Riders Nos. 1 to 4 may have a maximum of seven rides. This includes one tactical substitute, one rider replacement and one Heat 15/16 ride.

Each reserve may have a maximum of seven rides that can be taken at any time. All exclusions count as rides, and a reserve that has been excluded may not be used in the same heat again.

All riders must have taken at least three rides by the end of Heat 14 unless declared injured.

In Heats 4 to 14, a team behind by eight or more points may substitute a programmed rider with any other rider in the team, provided each rider is only used as a tactical substitute once. A substitute rider takes the helmet colour and starting gate position of the replaced rider. Both riders in a heat may be substituted in this manner, provided the Referee is clearly notified which substitute replaces which rider.

After Heat 14 of a 16-heat match, each team nominates their riders for the two remaining heats; the home team declaring first. Riders Nos. 1 to 4 may only be nominated as follows: Heat 15 - two lowest scorers, Heat 16 - two highest scorers. The scores from all rides are counted and bonus points are included. Team members scoring an equal number of points may be nominated for any heat where they are eligible.

The team scoring the greater number of points over all heats is declared the winner. When teams score an equal number of points, the match is declared a draw.

All riders must take at least two rides during the meeting unless declared injured.

Race points scored over all heats are used to determine the final team placings. Where two or more teams are tied for a place, each team nominates a rider for a runoff.

Team members may decide amongst themselves which gate positions they will take in their heats. Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside.

A reserve may have a maximum of six rides that can be taken at any time, plus one additional ride as a tactical substitute. All exclusions count as rides.

No rider is required to take a minimum number of rides.

After Heat 10, a team behind the leading team by six or more points at the end of each even-numbered heat, may substitute a rider in their next heat with any other rider in the team. Each rider however, may only be used as a tactical substitute once, and only one substitution per heat is allowed.

Race points scored over all heats are used to determine the final placings. Where two or more teams are tied for a place, each team nominates a rider for a runoff.

No rider is required to take a minimum number of rides.

Race points scored over all heats are used to determine the final team placings. Where two or more teams are tied for a place, each team nominates a rider for a runoff.

12-rider Individual Competition

This format is occasionally used for open meetings.

These meetings comprise twelve competitors and two reserves. A draw is held before the meeting to determine the riding order, and these numbers are worn on the race jackets.

The heat format is determined as follows:

Heat Red

Semi-Final: 2nd, 3rd, 6th & 7th placed riders after Heat 12
Final: 1st to 4th placed riders after the Semi-Finals

Riders take the starting gate positions indicated. Gate positions in the Semi-Finals and Final are drawn by ballot. Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside.

Where two or more riders are tied on race points after the Qualification Heats or Semi-Finals, the tie is resolved as follows:

  1. When only two riders tied, points scored in the heats where they met
  2. Most wins
  3. Most second places
  4. A ballot
Race points accumulated over all heats, including the Semi-Finals and Final, determine the final classification. In the event that two or more riders are tied on race points for first, second or third place, the result of the Final is used to determine their placings.

During the Qualification Heats, the reserves may alternately take the rides of any incapacitated rider, replace any rider excluded for a starting infringement, or replace any rider excluded for exceeding the two minute time allowance. A reserve may not directly replace another rider in the Semi-Finals or Final, but they may qualify if they score enough race points. Each reserve may ride in a maximum of four Qualification Heats.

The reserves for the Semi-Finals are those riders placed 9th and below after the Qualification Heats. The reserves for the Final are those riders placed 5th and below after the Semi-Finals.
